The One, the Only Angelina JoliešŸ‘‘

Angelina Jolieā€™s recent appearance at the 2024 Governors Awards ā€” wearing a designer-less vintage dress, no less ā€” reminded me sheā€™s an icon in more ways than one. In celebration of that, enjoy the following collection of five of the movie starā€™s best looks from the past twenty years.

2004 OscarsšŸŽ„

Sydney Sweeney made headlines earlier this year for wearing this exact same dress on the red carpet, but the inimitable Jolie did it first. She rocked this stunning Marc Bouwer gown at the 2004 Oscars in a loose, yet unique nod to Marilyn Monroe.

2014 UN Global SummitšŸŒ

Outside of acting, Jolie has devoted over twenty years to humanitarian work with the UN. Her gray pleated pants and white pussybow top at the 2014 UN Summit respected the seriousness of the occasion without sacrificing her own style and personality.

2024 The Outsiders PremierešŸŒ³

In the year of our Lord 2024, Ms. Jolie is as radiant as ever. Her red lip, amber cloak, and gold dress combined to form a timeless look that reminds us her star wonā€™t fade anytime soon.

Book Reviews:

I have officially hit that point in the semester where I just want to run away, and in lieu of actually doing so Iā€™m attempting to go outside instead. Anyway, hereā€™s a few pieces on the earthly.

  1. The Overstory š– °

Iā€™m not going to lie and say that this Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel by Richard Powers isnā€™t one of the most devastating literary works Iā€™ve ever readā€”it is, and yet I canā€™t keep from going back to it as the years pass.

  2. Upstream ā›†

Upstream is a collection of essays rather than a collection of poems, but it is also a misted clearing, a roaring of rapids, that scent of woods and water and life that sinks into your bones. ā€œMay I stay forever in the stream,ā€ indeed.

  3. Migrations š“…Ŗ

This book aches and soothes in the same moment, and while I donā€™t know if itā€™s an accurate depiction of extinction, it is a deeply powerful one. Charlotte McConaghyā€™s novel is the kind of breath that freezes the air in your lungs and leaves you gasping, reeling, and desperate.

Hello and happy pre-holidays! This week is going to be a little different. Today Iā€™m sharing one of my favorite cookie recipes ā€” gingersnapsā€” in honor of my impending return home for Thanksgiving break.

Randomly, this gingersnap recipe comes from a Downton Abbey recipe book I picked up from Jo-Ann Fabrics on a whim. I only tried it out because we had recently read ā€œBartleby the Scrivenerā€ in English class and I go crazy for a cheeky real life literature reference. (I promise our regularly scheduled programming will return soonā€¦)

Ingredients (MAKES ABOUT 48 COOKIES)šŸŖ

  • 2Ā½ cups (310 g) flour

  • 1Ā½ teaspoons ground ginger

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • Ā½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Ā¼ teaspoon ground cloves

  • Ā¼ teaspoon salt

  • Ā¾ cup (160 ml) canola oil

  • 1 cup (210 g) firmly packed light brown sugar

  • ā…“ cup (115 g) dark molasses (black treacle)

  • 1 whole egg, lightly whisked

  • Ā¾ cup (130 g) chopped crystallized ginger

  • 1 egg white

  • Ā½ cup (115 g) coarse sugar

Instructions āœļø

  1. Preheat the oven to 325Ā°F (165Ā°C). Line two sheet pans with parchment paper.

  2. Combine the flour, ground ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a sifter or fine-mesh sieve and set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, use a wooden spoon to stir together the oil, brown sugar, and molasses until well-combined. Add the whole egg and beat until blended. Sift the flour mixture into the oil mixture and stir until blended. Stir in the crystallized ginger.

  4. In a small bowl, lightly whisk the egg white. Spread the coarse sugar in a shallow bowl.

  5. With dampened hands, shape the dough into 1-inch (2.5-cm) balls.

  6. Brush each ball lightly with the egg white, then roll them in the sugar to coat them lightly. Place the dough balls about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart on the prepared pans.

  7. Bake the biscuits until the tops are set and crackled, 15-18 minutes.

  8. Let cool on the pans for 5 minutes, then transfer to the racks and let cool completely until firm.

Emma Chamberlain Embraces Retro Inspiration for Second Warby Parker Collection

Itā€™s time to be an academic weapon. Yep, you heard me right ladies: finals are just around the corner. Now, Iā€™m a firm believer in the whole ā€œlook good, feel goodā€ statement, but itā€™s hard to do that while keeping warm. So, how are we accessorizing? Glasses. Here are the most studious spectacles to get that A!

WICKED (2024) Releases Friday Nov 22ndšŸŖ„

Ready for one of the most iconic villain origin stories to hit the big screen? The Wicked movie is officially on the way.

Wicked first debuted on Broadway in 2003, where Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba. The interconnected story of the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West takes place long before Dorothy drops into the wonderful land of Oz. In fact, the prequel details the unlikely friendship between the two then-aspiring witches in their youth before they became enemies, changing the fate of their lives, and Oz, for good.

In case you havenā€™t heard by now, mega popstar Ariana Grande and Tony-winner Cynthia Erivo will lead the upcoming films as witches Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, and will be directed by Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heights fame.
