A Sprinkling of Serves at the TIME100 Gala✨

Repeat after me: I am to my final exams what Daniel Roseberry is to Schiaparelli (i.e. master and commander). I don’t know about you, but I feel far more productive after perusing great gowns, beautiful gowns.

The good news is that the 2025 TIME100 gala is here to quench our designer thirsts in this dark hour. The bad news is that only a handful of celebrities locked in for this event, which honors the stars of the magazine’s annual list of one hundred most influential people.

Listed below are the few guests who made appropriate sacrifices to the style gods prior to the gala. May the odds be ever in your favor!

Blake Lively

Blake Lively’s legal fate may be uncertain, but her sense of style certainly isn’t. Her red Zuhair Murad dress was one of the few successful spins on TIMES’ signature color.

Demi Moore

The woman, the myth, the legend. Demi Moore stunned in an ethereal, classically draped dress designed by Zac Posen and Kim Jones.

Nicole Scherzinger

The pose? The mug? The sparkle? The former Pussycat Doll really gagged us with yet another dress by red carpet favorite, Zuhair Murad.

Nok Suntaranon

I didn’t know who Nok Suntaranon was before this event, but now I’m her biggest fan. The award-winning chef’s floor-length, floral dress was a refreshing reprieve from the other guests’ monotone offerings

Simone Biles

What better way to end this list than with this cutie? Biles' Oscar de La Renta minidress stood out as a playful favorite among more traditional silhouettes.

Sitting at the precipice of finals means I haven’t much time for anything that doesn’t result in a grade. In the interest of positivity, I offer here a selection of the things I have had time for (or, more accurately, the things I haven’t, but that I’ve read anyway).

  1. Ordinary Human Failings Oh, how this book broke me. If only I had the time to pick up the pieces; alas, an essay waits. ā€œThe trying would be the life’s work,ā€ Megan Nolan pens, ā€œthey both understood this.ā€

  2. The Neapolitan Novels Okay, so I haven’t actually reread this yet, but I’m planning on it, and I feel like this is a good way to build up some anticipation. It’s written by Elena Ferrante, author of the true character novel — and, of course, ā€œwhen there is no love, not only the life of the people becomes sterile but the life of cities.ā€

  3. The Art of Fiction I generally adore The Paris Review (and have been dying for years for a physical subscription), and this column of interviews with authors and writers is no different. It’s also endless (there’s more than 250 of them), so I can always find something in the archives that’s perfect for any given moment.

Luxurious Layovers: 10 Hours in Istanbulā€āœˆļø

Thanks to the global success of Turkish Airlines, intercontinental flights increasingly feature a long layover in Istanbul airport — and your trip shouldn’t stop there! After 5 trips over the past 2 years, here’s how I make the most of a 1-day layover. All stops are in a 10-minute walking radius.

Suleymaniye Mosque offers 16th-century architecture and one of the best views in the city.

Kağıthane Station: When you land at the airport, don’t sit in traffic — follow signs for the metro line, and take the high-speed rail all the way to the last stop: Kağıthane Station in the north of the city. Here, you can cross the street to the M7 metro line and connect to all of Istanbul through subway, tram/light rail, buses, and ferries!

Seven Hills Restaurant: This rooftop restaurant is situated just between the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Four Seasons Istanbul, and the glittering blue waters of the Bosporus. It has some of the best pics in the city, and the food is impressive (in taste and affordability) too!

Grand Bazaar: It’s world-famous for a reason — wander through the streets of the Kapalı Ƈarşı, which is only four minutes away from other monuments. Stop for a treat at Hafiz Mustafa dessert shop on the way.

Hurrem Sultan Hammam: Want to treat yourself after long flights? My favorite hammam (Turkish bathhouse) is a 5-minute walk from Hagia Sophia, and offers a peaceful retreat with massages and body scrubs. This one is a bit pricey (it’s worth it!), but if you’re on a budget check out Gedikpasa Hamam down the street (starts at $24 including everything), operating since 1475.

Basilica Cisterns: One of the best views might just be underground! This is a sprawling and flawlessly-preserved Roman water chamber stretching nearly 10,000 square meters — check for tickets online in advance to save time in line.

Honorable Mentions: Column of Constantine, Sirkeci Train Museum, Suleymaniye Mosque for unparalleled views, and Meşale Cafe for banana milkshakes!

See you next week!
