Happy February, everyone! šš
Love is in the air, and so is the excitement of a brand-new month! With Valentineās Day right around the corner, itās the perfect time to celebrate love in all its formsāself-love, friendships, and community. But February isnāt just about hearts and rosesāitās also Black History Month, a time to honor the rich culture, achievements, and resilience of Black communities throughout history and today.āØ
Black History & Contributions to Fashion:

Braidsš
Historically used to signify tribal affiliation, marital status, and social standing, braids remain a significant hairstyle in Black culture.
Hoop earringsš
Josephine Baker, a Black French Jazz performer and Civil Rights activist, popularized large hoop earrings in the 1920s. In the 1960s, hoop earrings were a popular accessory for women of color during the Black Power movement.
Name Plate Jewelryš
During the 1980s and 1990s, nameplate necklaces became a staple of hip hop culture, being popularized by artists like Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick.

Designer Spotlight: Miss Soheeiš©°
Today, we are revisiting the designer spotlight series to cover an astounding talent who really knows how to work the runway: Miss Sohee. Miss Sohee, a couture house founded and creative directed by Sohee Park, is a dream for every girl who grew up on Barbie movies.
The brandās trademark jewel tones, elaborate embroidery, and sensual curves strike the perfect balance between adult glamour and girlhood fantasy. Each design is rooted in centuries of history, as Ms. Park herself is known to pull from her own Korean heritage and Western Romantic art as inspiration.
This intricate craftsmanship has not gone unnoticed. A-list stars like Bella Hadid, Ariana Grande, and Naomi Campbell have all flounced down red carpets in her designs.
Miss Soheeās Spring 2025 couture collection only added to this growing legacy, setting a high bar for much older houses at NYFW. Coco Rocha opened the show in a shockingly delicate Chantilly lace bodysuit. This first look was followed by two dozen sparkling gowns in shades of pink, green, cream, and purple.
If youāre having a tough time with classes this week, take a look at Miss Soheeās website to perk yourself up. After all, who wouldnāt want to start their day with glossy satin and liquid organza?

In honor of awards season and this yearās Fall/Winter Fashion Week, I offer up a handful of pieces which attempt to make sense of what it means to have taste.
āNotes on āTasteāā š¢Ö“ą»š¦ Brie Wolfsonās piece is, I think, a good starting point for the conversation. Itās accessible, thought-provoking, and full of references to further readings. āTaste is earnest,ā as she writes, and who am I to deny that sincerity?
Heather Hurstās PIGPEN š I am a longtime lover of this creator and her opinions on fashion, home decor, and life-living; itās all the more fun when thereās a Substack to go along with the rest of it. Give her a read, and let me know when it changes your life.
āWhat is Glitter?ā ā.Ė This is less theoretical and more of a case study, if a semi-ridiculous one. In line with the glitz and glamour of awards season, with the urge to āmake long winter nights slightly brighter,ā is glitter. Love it? Hate it? Want to roll around in a big tub of it and emerge looking like a mid-2000s vampire? I guess it all depends on your taste.

Welcome back everybody! Since the Grammy Awards are approaching, I did a little digging to find out what theyāve been serving the music industryās finest at the post-ceremony afterparty over the years.š½ļø
š„„2023š„„
Chef Jason Fullilove served a flight-themed menu that included coconut rice, plantain salad, Jamaican beef patties, and coconut white fish ceviche. So jealous.
š¤2019š¤
In line with that yearās Renaissance-inspired afterparty theme, Chef Joe Flamm presented a procession of various appetizers like frutti de mare followed by several Italian stations.
šŖ»2017šŖ»
If youāve ever wondered what it would be like to be a forest spirit having girl dinner in the woods, you shouldāve gone to the 2017 Midsummer Nightās Dream themed afterparty. The dishes featured vegetables from the more whimsical side of the grocery store like purple kale and medjool dates.
As I read, I wondered how much time and effort went into planning those elaborate menus. Maybe Iāll find out for myself next semester when I have my first apartment partyā¦and youāre all invited ;)
