Hey Nana!

Dear reader,

I never wanted to write an advice column because I think I give great advice. I’m only one human being with one perspective, guys! I’m not God. But I do think too many advice columns nowadays are written by old people with tons of silly qualifications like ‘life experience.’

Wouldn’t you want help from somebody who actually knows what you’re going through? Someone who’s physically closer to the rawness of the human condition?

If you’re looking for that, feel free to drop your question, thought, secret below! Cheers to figuring sh*t out together.

Best, Nana

Bella Hadid Returns with a Bang (and a Slicked Back Bun)

All hail Bella Hadid! This past week, the “Princess of Nazareth” and supermodel made her runway re-debut at Paris Fashion Week. Her grand return after a two year hiatus marked another milestone: her first walk for Saint Laurent. On September 24, she strutted her stuff for their Spring 2025 collection, sporting an oversized black suit with matching thick-framed glasses. Her look was part of creative director Anthony Vaccarello’s larger play on the personal wardrobe of the brand’s founder, Yves Saint Laurent.

Despite her absence on the runway, Hadid has kept busy the past two years. Recently, she’s made even more headlines than usual with the dual launches of her Orebella fragrance and relationship with Adan Banuelos.

Still, the reasons for her hiatus were decidedly more serious. She announced in 2022 that she was putting her fast-paced profession on pause to focus on her mental health and persistent battle with Lyme Disease.

Her break was originally indefinite, but Hadid has clearly been planning her return to the fashion world for months. She landed her first Saint Laurent campaign in June. Soon after, she sashayed down the Cannes carpet wearing one of their sheer dresses, raising millions of dollars for the brand seemingly overnight. That alone should tell you her star hasn’t dimmed one bit.

Welcome back, Ms. Hadid! We’re all excited to see what you do next!👑

By Lilian

Hi there!👋My name is Lilian and I’m currently a sophomore design student at Cornell. This week, get to know some top spots in Ithaca! (come visit :3)

Standout Successes

  1. Xi An Street Food🍜

    1. Xi An’s tomato braised beef hand-ripped noodles have been on my mind this whole semester.

  2. Fresh apple cider donuts from Applefest🍎

    1. My mouth waters as I write… Last year my suitemates and I had the best donuts I’ve ever tasted, made fresh right in front of our eyes by an Amish family at Ithaca’s annual Applefest. By the time you read this, I will have gotten another taste this year. I can’t even express how excited I am!

  3. Thompson & Bleecker🍕

    1. The one and only! Thompson & Bleecker is where you’ll find birthday dinners, celebrations, all things of that nature. Most people go for the truffle alfredo, vodka pasta, and absurdly yummy pizza. I also enjoy the ambiance and gorgeous dishware!

  4. Ninja Chicken🍗

    1. The new girl in town after Loumie’s got shut down. They have a concerningly large menu of boba and drinks that seems disproportionate to the chicken options, but have no fear. Both food and drinks are satisfactory, and what matters most is that they’re open late!

Cake, Coffee, and Caffeine

TEMPLE OF ZEUS: one of my two favorite coffee spots on campus! Last semester I had three out of six classes in Goldwin Smith and I became quite addicted to Zeus’ iced coffees with caramel syrup and a splash of oat milk.

a. The coffee is strong and flavorful, the oat milk is creamy, the caramel is DELISH, and the drinks are  never watery.

b. I can’t speak for the other food and drinks on the menu, but I swear by their iced coffee…

GREEN DRAGON: my other favorite! The music and vibes are always excellent, but everyone already knows that. Last week, I had an absolutely magical hot coffee from Dragon, which was exactly what the doctor ordered  on a terrible rainy day.

GIMME! COFFEE: The coffee is fine and the matcha is subpar, but what really stands out for me is their pastries! I don’t spend much time at their off-campus locations (someone buy me a car…) but Gimme is always a great incentive to haul myself down to the compsci building a few times a month.

Lady Bird, (2017) Greta Gerwig

Lady Bird is set in the parts of California most would like to forget. Having grown up in northern California myself, the stark differences between the coast and the valley can be typified by the fact that the most exciting thing about 2002 in the valley is that it was a palindrome. Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird meticulously navigates the fine line between being a indie movie that rawly navigates a mother-daughter relation, and a mainstream film that still touches on all the things that characterize it as a coming-of-age film: losing one’s virginity, ditching school, and smoking and drinking for the first time.

Unlike other coming-of-age movies, Lady Bird is not intentionally romanticized. Gerwig’s portrayal of Lady Bird in her dull and gray Catholic school uniform with bubblegum pink hair and a matching bubblegum pink cast isn’t meant to be sexy. It’s supposed to be real.

One of the things that sets Gerwig's film apart from other teen comedies/dramas is that after the film’s end, I still don’t know whether I like Lady Bird or not. Lady Bird’s overzealous angst towards her mom, her shame in living on the wrong side of the tracks, and her having done Julie dirty can make it hard to like her. Yet, it’s easy to relate to her. It’s in tune with many mother-daughter relationships in all its complexities. Lady Bird’s mother loves her, but does she even like her? Perhaps the reason I, like many, feel so ambivalent about LadyBird is because she brings to the surface all the parts of yourself you try to hide.

Saorise Ronan’s limitless acting abilities bring Lady Bird to life. The tones and cadences she adds to the script elevate the complexities of Lady Bird’s character: she brings out her wit in addition to her vulnerabilities.

The cinematography captures a sense of slow-living that really forces people to pay attention to their lives. There are no distractions in the early 2000s, and there is nothing flashy about the valley. Lady Bird’s urge to move east “where the culture is” resonates so much with my own college decision. Tired of suburbia and ready to experience college-town grit, I, like Lady Bird, moved east, and in doing so, found myself missing all of suburbia’s mundanity. Despite “escaping” Sacramento, she finds herself missing all the things she subconsciously noticed about it. As Tiktok so adamantly regurgitates (RIP Lady Bird, you would’ve loved poetry slideshows; to be known is to be loved) to know Sacramento, to really pay attention to it, is to have at least liked it.
