Yes, it’s November, and yes, the winter holidays have begun to lurk on the edge of our vision, but that’s no excuse. Autumn isn’t over until I say it is, and what better way to let that fact really sink in than with a selection of curiosities deeply, deeply committed to the spirit of the season? So, on that autumnal note…

  1. The Secret History 📖

If you say you haven’t read it, I don’t believe you—and besides, what says autumn more than revisiting an old, somewhat-disturbing friend? If you’re telling the truth, though, and you really haven't paged through this tribute to the campus novel in all its morbid glory, then I don’t know what to tell you other than to get on it (and don’t even try to get me to forgive you for “all the things [you] did but mostly for the ones [you] did not”).

  2. Stoner 🖋

I can’t help but include multiple campus novels on this list; they’re just too of-the-season to resist. John Edward Williams’ addition to the collection is a quiet work, but a powerful on. I read it in a single sitting, and I think about it constantly.

  3. “October: An Elegy”

The title is fitting now that we’ve crept our way out of the tenth month and into the eleventh. I’ve had this poem stuck on the wall of every dorm room I’ve lived in thus far; with the lines “This is the season that begins / by ending. The space between light / and darkness is unresolved / as is the space between our hearts / and small trees. Beloved, rest,” how could I not?

  4. “On the Radical Hope of Patti Smith”

This piece, which was featured in a November 2022 edition of Harper’s Bazaar, has stuck with me since the first time I read it. Of course, I recommend all of Patti Smith’s work, from her essays to her books to her music, but this story on “the texture of Smith’s daily life” leaves me feeling like I’m simultaneously floating and tethered to something much larger than myself.

Halloween Hangover: Best Looks from Halloweekend 2024

As Slice of Life’s resident fashion sommelier, I would kindly suggest pairing the immensely stressful election with wonderfully escapist art. With that in mind, treat yourself to the following “Best Halloween Costumes of 2024” list, tricks not included.

  1. Megan Thee Stallion as Starfire

Slayed the boots house down, Houston I’m deceased. Megan Thee Stallion did every nerd proud by cosplaying the DC Comics character Starfire this Halloween.

She evidently did her homework, as her voluminous locks and vintage comic background are a clear ode to the ’80s iteration of the character. Needless to say, she looked good doing it, too. #Hottieween indeed.

  1. Jennifer Garner as Jenna Rink from 13 Going on 30🎉

This past Halloween, Jennifer Garner revisited her character from the 2000s rom-com 13 Going on 30. Jenna Rink’s green, blue, and purple dress is now one of the most recognizable costumes from that decade, so it’s only fitting that Garner herself revived it this year.

  1. Paris Hilton as Britney Spears ✏️

Paris Hilton fiercely recreated Britney Spears’ famous schoolgirl look from her “Baby One More Time” music video. The photos hark back to the early aughts, the decade in which Hilton reached the peak of her fame. If news of “The Simple Life” reboot is any indication, this outfit might also be preparing us for a comeback. That’s hot.

  1. Alex Consani as sexy Gru😮

Speaking of “hot,” Alex Consani recently hit the black carpet with what appeared to be a sexy Gru costume. The supermodel wore a prosthetic nose, striped scarf, and coat that bore a striking resemblance to the Despicable Me villain. The lingerie and heels put a new spin on it with her trademark irreverent humor. I can’t think of a better person to lead the fashion industry into the future.

  1. Ed Sheeran as Monkey Ed Sheeran🙈🙉

I don’t even know where to begin with this one. At some point in the recent past, an AI-generated photo of Ed Sheeran in a monkey suit on a table went viral. The real Ed apparently decided to embrace the joke this Halloween. The singer posted a photo to his Instagram wearing a fully body, giant-eared monkey suit while holding the meme in hand and smirking into the camera. The caption? “Haters will say it’s AI.”

  1. Heidi Klum as E.T.🌌🚀

I know, I know. She’s haunting. Terrifying. Profane. Unfortunately, she’s also the queen of Halloween. Klum’s annual Halloween party has been ground zero for outlandishly dressed celebs for twenty-three years now. The host herself never disappoints, and this year is no different.

The model donned elaborate prosthetics that turned her into a human-sized E.T., topped off with a blonde wig, accessories, and slapdash makeup I wish I could unsee. If her costume was horrifying for you too, take heart! Thinking about it is still eminently preferable to thinking about politics right now.

Rise and shine! Happy November, everyone. This past weekend has been a rollercoaster for me and hopefully for you too. This week, I’ll be taking you all grocery shopping to recover from another excellent Halloween.

Standout Successes

  1. Trader Joe’s Steak Tacos🌮

    1. Look away if you’re allergic to the kitchen, but making some simple steak tacos  from a quick trip to Trader Joe’s gives me so much joy.

    2. After grabbing some steak, tortillas, onions, tomatoes, cheese, and TJs guaca-salsa, we head back to the dorm to cook the steak and cut up our toppings.

    3. The best part about these tacos is sharing them with my suitemates while laughing about the weekend’s events; it’s truly an amazing debrief meal.

  2. Finger Fruits🍇

    1. If you’re like me, sometimes life gets a little too fast-paced to keep track of the smaller details. The other day, I was cutting apples for a Halloween event and came to the realization that I had not eaten a fresh fruit in probably a full month.

    2. Something I’ve tried to do to get myself to eat more fruit is buy fruits like grapes or berries, which are easily snackable and way less of a commitment than whole oranges or apples.

    3. Do I sound kind of insane and like an anti-fruit monster? Maybe, but this method works for me.

Cake, Coffee, and Caffeine

  1. Good & Gather K-Cups

    1. I used to be an adamant hater of Keurig coffee. The concept as a whole was puzzling. It seemed impossible for lukewarm coffee pissed out of a plastic cup to taste good.

    2. However, this year I caved. I bought a Keurig K-Mini for my dorm to save (or have the appearance of saving) money on buying coffee. To my shock and horror, the coffee I get from my little machine sometimes beats five dollar cups from a campus cafe.

  2. Trader Joe’s Brown Sugar Coffee Creamer🍯

    1. Coffee creamer is one of those things that I’m always down to try new versions of. Since I’m extremely susceptible to seasonal marketing, there’s a 95% chance I will purchase every pumpkin/gingerbread/holiday cookie flavored coffee creamer I see at Target.

    2. That being said, I can tell you that the Trader Joe’s brown sugar oat creamer is a tried and true classic, rising above the novelty of miscellaneous seasonal flavors and earning a permanent spot in my minifridge.

Singin’ in the Rain (1952) Gene Kelly

For me, the main difference between Old Hollywood and New Hollywood is that Old Hollywood films were detached from real life. Though old movies were more than mere distractions, they seemed to prioritize entertainment above all else. In contrast, today’s films attempt to encapsulate the human experience by paralleling reality as much as possible.

As such, it was sort of refreshing to see an Old Hollywood film like Singin’ in the Rain. The performative nature of the overzealous singing and dancing is what made it so fun. The over-the-top performances are partly due to the musical genre, but there is also a sense of caricature in actors like Gene Kelly. Kelly moves and dances like he’s a cartoon himself, a drawing on a page that has taken on a life of its own.

The costuming is very emblematic of the roaring twenties. The character Rita dons classic flapper dresses, while Don and Cosmo find themselves always in vests and fitted pants with a casual air. These costume choices only enhance the charm of wide-eyed, happy-go-lucky characters who are ready to sing and dance at all times.

I think this ability to truly put a smile on one’s face is what has made Singin/ in the Rain a Hollywood classic, a precious relic of a different time.
